The question “Who is Jesus?” has shaped history, faith, and countless lives. Some see Him as a wise teacher, others as a prophet, and many as the Savior of the world. From a biblical perspective, Jesus is the cornerstone of Christianity—the sinless Son of God who came to redeem humanity.

To truly understand who Jesus is, we need to explore the historical evidence, what Scripture reveals, and how we can have a personal relationship with Him. Let’s dive into the truth of who Jesus is, why He came, and what that means for you today.

The Historical Jesus: What Do Historians Say?

The life of Jesus is not just a matter of faith—it’s also a matter of history. Scholars from various fields agree on several key aspects of His life:

Jesus Was a Real Historical Figure

Roman historians like Tacitus and Jewish scholars like Josephus confirm that Jesus of Nazareth lived in the first century and was executed. Josephus even described Him as "a wise man" and "a doer of marvelous deeds," offering independent evidence of His existence.

Jesus Was a Teacher and Miracle Worker

The Gospels depict Jesus as a teacher who spoke with authority and performed miracles. Even critics of Christianity acknowledge His profound impact on His followers, which is evidenced by the rapid growth of His movement.

Jesus Was Crucified

The crucifixion of Jesus is one of the most documented events of ancient history. Both Christian and secular sources agree that He was executed under Pontius Pilate, underscoring the central role His death plays in understanding His identity.

While historical records establish Jesus as a real person, the Bible goes deeper, revealing who He truly is.

Who the Bible Says Jesus Is

The Bible answers the question “Who is Jesus?” by presenting Him as fully divine and fully human—the Savior of the world.

Jesus Is the Son of God

  • Jesus said of Himself: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” —John 3:16

  • Jesus is not just a teacher or prophet; He is the Son of God, sent to bring salvation to humanity.

Jesus Is the Word Made Flesh

  • “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” —John 1:1-3, 14

  • This passage reveals Jesus as the eternal Word of God, who took on human form to dwell among us.

Jesus Is the Savior

  • “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” —Matthew 1:21

  • The name “Jesus,” derived from the Hebrew Yeshua, literally means “salvation.” From the moment of His birth, His mission was clear.

Jesus Is Without Sin

  • “We have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet He did not sin.” —Hebrews 4:15

  • Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life, making Him the only one capable of taking on the sins of the world.

Did Jesus Sin?

If Jesus was fully human, could He have sinned? Scripture makes it clear:

Jesus Was Tempted but Did Not Sin

Matthew 4:1-11 recounts how Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness. Despite facing intense challenges, He resisted every temptation by standing on God’s Word.

Jesus’ Sinlessness Is Essential to Salvation

  • “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” —2 Corinthians 5:21

  • Jesus’ perfect obedience qualified Him to take on the sins of the world. If He had sinned, He could not have been our Savior.

Why Did Jesus Die?

The crucifixion of Jesus wasn’t a tragic accident—it was the centerpiece of God’s redemptive plan.

The Problem of Sin

  • “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” —Romans 3:23

  • Sin separates us from God, and the consequence of sin is spiritual death (Romans 6:23).

Jesus’ Sacrifice

  • “He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds, we are healed.” —Isaiah 53:5

  • Jesus willingly took our punishment, paying the price for sin with His own life.

A Demonstration of God’s Love

  • “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” —Romans 5:8

  • Jesus’ death was a powerful expression of God’s love, offering reconciliation to all who believe.

Victory Over Death

  • “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.” —1 Corinthians 15:17

  • Jesus didn’t stay in the grave. His resurrection is proof of His victory over sin and death, securing eternal life for all who trust in Him.

Bible Verses About Who Jesus Is

The Bible is filled with verses that reveal Jesus’ identity and mission. Here are a few to reflect on:

  • “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” —John 14:6

  • “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created... He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” —Colossians 1:15-17

  • “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” —Revelation 1:8

How to Respond to Jesus

Knowing who Jesus is demands a response. Here’s how you can take your next step:

Recognize Your Need for a Savior

Admit your need for grace and salvation.

  • “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” —Romans 10:9

Repent and Believe

Turn away from sin and place your trust in Jesus. Go public with your faith in Christ Jesus.

  • “Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” —Acts 2:38

  • “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out.” —Acts 3:19

Commit to a Relationship

Following Jesus is about more than belief—it’s a daily relationship. Spend time in prayer, study the Bible, and connect with a community of believers.

Who Is Jesus to You?

The question “Who is Jesus?” is not just historical or theological—it’s personal. Jesus is the Son of God, the Savior who died for your sins, and the risen Lord who invites you into eternal life.

If you’re wondering “Did Jesus sin?” or “Why did Jesus die?”, the Bible gives clear answers that point to His divinity and His mission to redeem humanity. The decision to follow Him can change your life forever.

Who is Jesus to you? He invites you to know Him, trust Him, and walk with Him into a life of purpose, peace, and hope.
